"Avocado Green" is such a lovely color. It is right up there with the perennial favorite "Harvest Gold!" Yes, there are still people who believe this 40 years after the trend departed popular culture!
The question for many home owners is "To improve or not?"
In Viera and Melbourne Florida, the question is often "To add a pool or not?" Something about living in Florida makes a pool a must have thing!
There are many imp
rovements home owners make for the right reasons.
There are also some where they do it for the wrong reasons.
As for the pool issue, my response is always the same - put it in if you are going to use it and enjoy it. Otherwise, don't count on getting any return or added value when you sell.
There are some improvements that return most of the investment like bathrooms and kitchens. Here is a web site that allows you to compare return on investment for home improvements by locality.

I used to have avocado green appliances... LOL loved them at the time. Now when I see them in homes I cringe!
Thanks for sharing. Best wishes for continued success.
Years go we saw a house....the bathrooms had lime green and turqupise fixtures, sahap carpet of course...and the refrigerator had the motor on top...it was white though...the market was faster...and it actually did sell,,,the decor is a permanenet fixture in my head....homes not dressed up and ready to sell..do not.

Whenever I have someone who is listing their home and they want to tell me how much they spent on the pool I just ask did you enjoy it? Pools are either really good or really bad...depends on the buyer.
If you have avocado, brown, poppy red, harvest gold appliances..chances are they are from the 1970's and should be deep sixed for inefficiency. They are worn out and running continuous in the case of refrigerators and hard to get parts for that burner that does not work, the missing knob on the clock element. Have a brother in Bangor Maine at Penquis CAP who when he looks at his watch after so many years, automatically yanks and replaces appliances that are at the end of their live or costing more money than new efficient models bought in bulk by the hundreds.
There is a market for absolutely everything...Tell anyone out there that believes those old appliences are worth something to sell them on EBay or Craigslist. THEN they can take that money and put it towards new appliances.
PS I have a friend that is convinced his old Jeep Wagoneer will be in high demand one day in Hollywood. I hate to say it but I don't think they will be making "Uncle Buck part 2" LOL!!
Gary-I thankfully never had those colors but my Mom's trailer in NY had the harvest gold. I did have a aboveground pool though and then when I left it. I sold it for a lot less than I paid for it. So no return on my investment there. I bought it for pleasure but it brought much more work than pleasure. Have a great weekend. <SMILE>
I think I will start an avocado green appliance fan page on Facebook!
Andrew - Deep sixed..good method. Efficiency is probably the biggest reason to replace them..let alone questionable taste! Thanks.
Sally & David - You are right. Thanks.
Roy - Tanks.
Monika - Cringe..good response!
Karin - Good suggestion. There will be someone who buys them! Thanks.
Sharon - Buying a pool for pleasure..that is the reason. Thanks.
I trulys agree that updating or just getting those colors out of the kitchen can sell a house. Nothing puts age on the place more than gold and green appliances. Many young buyers cringe or just turn around and walk out when they see these. I like the new designer colors!
Gary...
Bathrooms and kitchens are at the top of every homebuyer's list, that's for sure!
I'll join your FB Avocado Green page!! When you think of renovations, you HAVE to think of RESALE and that website does a great job of laying it out there for homeowners to know what rehabs are a good investment, for sure.
Have a wonderful weekend...
Jody - A modern lokking kitchen is worth the investment. Thanks.
Richard - Bathrooms and kitchens is what we tell them. Thanks.
Debe - I don't think some think of "down the road" But rarely does one live their entire ife in a house. Thanks.
Some retro items can never be fashionable again. Adios avocado green and gold appliances!
Thanks for the great post. However, when I click on another area I get the "Server Error in '/' Application." Can't look at New York area. I'm not thinking about pools now that the temps here in NY are around 30 degrees, in the afternoon.
Kate - You are right..some retro is good but these no way! Thanks.
Ken - Thanks. I will check the link.
