Who among us does not like to be liked? From a person's earliest of times there is a need to be liked by those around us. Sure there may be some who say they don't care if anyone likes them. I do not believe I know anyone like that myself though.
In the business world we would like our customers and clients to like us. Look at all the companies that spend tons of money on surveys about how the customer feels about the company (JD Power Survey). Look at the money corporations pay organizations and consultants to determine how employees feel about the employer or their immediate superiors. Companies want to be liked. People want to be liked.
Real estate agents are no different than the rest of the population (although they may want to believe otherwise). They want to be liked. We want you to like us and be completely satisfied with the services we provide. After all, we want to be referred to that person you know who is buying or selling! We do not want you to "flag" us with a negative comment.
That is why it is important to accept the facts as presented.
I can not tell you your house will sell for more than the market price no matter how badly I need the listing. I will tell you what your competitors are selling for at this time. If I give you unrealistic expectations and don't sell your house, will you still like me?
I can not tell you that we will find your dream house when your budget is limited. I will help you find the dream house within your budget!

Gary - Good post. It's important to do a good job while knowing you have done the right thing for the client. Hopefully they will thank you for your honesty but if not, there's always the dog :-)

I bet your little boston loves you forever and ever! My IG's best friends are bostons! Anyhow. I have dogs, they will love me forever. With business you do it on my terms or you can hire someone else. I don't care if they like me or not :)

There are many brokers here who, perhaps unintentionally, encourage their agents to buy the listing by providing bonuses and perks to the agent who brings in the most listings for the month. I used to know many of those agents. I say "used to" because they are no longer in business. No surprise ini my mind. When I was a Realtor many decades ago in Texas, we were taught "List to last," but one still has to get those listings sold!
