As per my usual morning routine I took my Boston Terrier for a walk early this morning. I noticed an unusual truck parked in a driveway down the street. I think it belonged to a visitor.
The thing that caught my eye was the tag on the front. It had a simple message:
#2 Dad is #1 Dad
I am not sure what the message really meant. I thought perhaps it was a reference to a step-father. Perhaps it was a daughter-in-law's commentary on her dad-in-law. Perhaps it was someone (like me) who had lost a real father but was lucky enough to have a father-in-law who was always there for me! Perhaps it was from someone who had a fill-in foster father who they felt close to....regardless, the message was clear. In someones eyes, this man was a key figure in their life.
Fathers have an opportunity to share and shape lives. Being a father is special. Having a father is special. My father passed away 29 years ago. I became a father 25 years ago. There is lots of joy and some ocasional heartache in being the child as well as being the father.
So, on Father's Day 2009, enjoy your role, be it child or father!

Gary,
I like the message. I lost my father recently so this will be the first without him. My father left when I was an infant and so #2 Dad came into the picture. He adopted me and loved me. My #2 Dad was my #1 Dad.
My best to you.
Victoria - Thank you for your comment. It is great when there is a number 2 dad. Enjoy your memories as they do last forever!
Gary, glad you shared the tag on the truck you had seen. #2 Dad is #1 Dad
I like the message I lost my Dad 23 years ago and think if him and miss him He was my #1 Dad but after his death my Uncle Joe became my #2 Dad.
Interesting bumper sticker - my guess would be step dad...but who knows? Happy Father's Day to You!
Kathleen - Thanks. It is a nice message. When the number one is no longer "here," it can be a blessing!
Liz - Who knows...did make me think, Thanks.
Gary, I hope you have a Happy Father's Day tomorrow! I will be pampering my #2 father, who isn't my biological father, but to me he's my #1 father.
Michelle - Thank you. Enjoy your time with your father tomorrow.
Gary, Hope that you have a wonderful Father's Day today. Take care and I hope that business is brisk.
Hi Gary:
WOW....that's an interesting tag...
Hoping that you had a wonderful Father's Day..
Sandy - Thanks. Business is moving in the right direction. Have a great week!
Toula - I did..thanks so much.
Hi Gary....Funny how signs like that can get you thinking, I would have looked at it the same way. Hope you had a nice Fathers Day and wishing you a productive new week.
Gail - Thanks. I had a very nice Father's Day. Have a great week!
My father died when I was six, but I never had the desire to be a father myself, other than to my dogs, cats, snakes, birds, fish, rats, mice, hampsters, and guinea pigs.
Russel - Sounds like you have enough "children" in your life. Thanks.
